What is Recessional?

The recessional is the formal exit of the newlywed couple and wedding party immediately following the ceremony. After being pronounced married and sharing a kiss, the couple walks back up the aisle together, followed by the wedding party in pairs, then the parents. The recessional music is typically more joyous and upbeat than the processional, celebrating the completed marriage. Guests often clap, cheer, or participate in a send-off (bubbles, sparklers, petals). The recessional marks the transition from ceremony to celebration and provides photo opportunities of the happy couple.
