What is Garter Toss?

The garter toss is a traditional wedding reception activity where the groom removes the bride's garter from her leg and tosses it to a group of unmarried male guests. Like the bouquet toss, the catcher is said to be the next to marry. This tradition has medieval origins related to proving consummation. Today, many couples skip this tradition as it can feel uncomfortable or outdated. Some couples do a modified version, skip it entirely, or replace it with alternative activities. If included, it typically follows the bouquet toss. The garter is usually a special blue or white piece worn on the bride's leg.
