What is Toasting Etiquette?

Toasting etiquette encompasses the traditions and proper form for raising a glass to honor someone at an event. The person being toasted should not drink to themselves but should remain seated and acknowledge the toast with a smile or nod. At weddings, traditional toasts include the best man's toast to the couple, the maid of honor's toast, and sometimes parent toasts. Toasts should be brief (2-3 minutes), heartfelt, and appropriate for all audiences. The toaster should stand, make eye contact with the honoree, and conclude by asking guests to raise their glasses.
