Etiquette & Manners

What is Host Line?

The host line on an invitation indicates who is hosting and paying for the event, traditionally the parents of the bride.

The host line is the opening line of a formal invitation that indicates who is hosting (and traditionally, who is paying for) the event. For traditional weddings, this was "Mr. and Mrs. [Bride's Parents] request the honour of your presence." Modern invitations may list both sets of parents, the couple themselves, or creative combinations. The host line sets the tone and indicates the formality of the event. When multiple parties co-host, their names may appear in various configurations based on contribution and family dynamics. Understanding host line etiquette helps navigate potentially sensitive family situations.

Examples

  • 1"Mr. and Mrs. Johnson request the pleasure of your company"
  • 2"Together with their families, Sarah and Michael invite you"
  • 3"The parents of the bride and groom request the honour"
